I believe that intuition is a sense that can be significantly heightened and explored through the making of art. For this workshop I invited children to build a large scale installation, responding to and playing with some of the ideas that inform my art practice, such as sustainability, architectural forms and utopia vs dystopia. I provided the children with a wide range of materials and I built a basic structure but the rest of the decision making was left up to them. This freedom of choice resulted in a vibrant and exciting array of three dimensional forms conjured up from the children’s own imagination and subconscious. I felt that it was important to encourage the participants to use their own intuition to express themselves freely rather than specifically telling them what they should make or how they should make it. Another key factor was the way the structure was transformed into an interactive plaything by adding things such as ramps and slides that children rolled balls down.
